Sunday, 17 February 2002, 11 am to 6 pm Introduction to the Artist: Born in New Delhi and based in Mumbai at present, Reena Saini Kallat's meteoric rise in the world of contemporary Indian art has swiftly established her in an enviable position.Her artistic reputation has grown with every award and accolade, and she has come a long way since she graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai and was awarded the prestigious Solomon Gladston award in 1995. Kallat's first solo show, 'Orchard of Home-Grown Secrets' displayed her flair for drawing upon varied media to present complex ideas encased in sensuous forms. Ideas of home and the world, creating a sense of belonging are among some of the themes that find expression through Reena's mixed media constructions. Reena Saini's second solo show, 'Skin' also garnered much critical acclaim. She has participated in a number of group shows as well as in an international artist's workshop, 'Big River 2', organized by CCA7 and the Triangle Arts Trust, Trinidad. Reena's most recent work for the Kala Ghoda Art Festival 2002 carries forward some of the ideas generated during the Trinidad experience. Of her decision to go online, Reena says, "The Internet would allow me to reach a wide spectrum of people from around the globe. It is an opportunity to tap their thoughts and views, their understanding of aesthetic processes, and encourage dialogue". With her website, the artist has attempted to, "create a single database which will carry information on my art and all its public extensions; and to document and record the various stages of my art practice".
